Talking with My Mouth Full

Get your mind out of the gutter. This is all quotes about food and life meet photos of local joints and homemade dishes.

The journey of a thousand pounds begins with a single burger. ~Chris O’Brien

For President’s Day I slept in until the princely hour of 8am, then went into Bethesda because free parking on a federal holiday? Sign me up!

Lunch at Kraze Burgers was okay, but nothing all that special. I got the Classic burger (tomato, onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard- cheese was extra and lettuce was on request) and a soda for $9. It was good, but messy- a 4-napkiner. Not in a “juicy burger” way, but in a “they went a little nuts with the mustard and ketchup” way. And I’m not a fan of burgers that have a high bun to meat ratio. Thumbs down on this one. Down, I say.

I found a vegetarian cookbook on sale for $8 at B&N. After a trip to Kraze Burgers, and the tummy ache I’m having, I’m thinking the all-veggie thing might be a good idea.

The trouble with eating Italian food is that five or six days later you’re hungry again. ~George Miller

Not even sure why I’m posting this, because I was totally underwhelmed with this meal. First of all, “flash fried” calamari? Done to death. The garlic aioli was good, but the only thing that saved it was the beer on the side (Sam Adams lager- totes forgot my rule about drinking beer that “fits” the cuisine, but then Sam Adams is from Boston and Boston is rife with awesome Italian joints- yes, that is my story and I’m sticking to it). When my friend joined me I asked for a table for dinner and the waitress acted confused- even after I suggested that perhaps the lil’ bar area table was not big enough for more than a plate (it wasn’t). She got her revenge by seating us next to an open window- it was a chilly night and our food went cold almost immediately. Awesome. Our new server couldn’t tell my friend what soppresata was and kept saying she’d bring us stuff we only mentioned as sounding good- a casual, “Hm, that’s interesting” translated to “I’ll bring you that.” Whut? The pasta came with roasted fennel but was still just a plate of spaghetti (ie something I could make at home.) A glass of Il Bastardo helped. Chocolate sauce on basil gelato? Madness. If I go back, it’ll be for the pizza, and that’s it. Wood fired oven blistery crust with rich toppings that made me cry when it cooled too quick. Madness, I tell you. Madness. The mural on the wall inside is pretty, but not worth the parking ridiculousness (meters until 10pm). Mad. ness. The leftover pizza and chunk of mousse cake made a great lunch. Meh. You win some you lose some.
