Talking with My Mouth Full

Get your mind out of the gutter. This is all quotes about food and life meet photos of local joints and homemade dishes.

Talk doesn’t cook rice.  ~Chinese Proverb

My last day at the kitchen store I was in the back pulling stock and saw a jar of pumpkin pesto sitting there, on the shelf, all by its lonesome. Just begging to be bought. Begging. But what to do with it?

I flipped over the jar and found a recipe for risotto and luckily I had the tail end of a bag of arborio and some great veggie boullion cubes. Unluckily I had to buy the mascarpone, the onion, the fresh sage, the parmesan- a nice guy at the grocery let me have some olive oil from a demo bottle so I wouldn’t have to buy a new bottle. And at the liquor store I managed to snag a cute lil’ bottle of white- 1/4 cup in, drank the rest.

I know they say you have to really pay attention to risotto, but I didn’t stir it constantly- in fact, I walked away from it for a bit- and it turned out fine. Don’t believe the hype, cooks and cookesses.

Delicious and rich. Maybe more suitable for a fall day, but movers can’t be choosers.

Hunger is the best pickle. ~Benjamin Franklin

After years of working for the Fed, my parents bought a farm in the country. They grow fruits and veggies, Dad keeps bees, Mom cans things. I love the wood burning stove, the riding mower, and the summer kitchen- where we harvest and bottle honey, and my mother churns out jams, jellies, relishes, and all manner of pickled deliciousness.

She gifts us some yummies each holiday and recently she gave me a recipe she likes for 24hr pickles. I made a batch and they are bread and buttery pickle goodness. I foresee burgers with homemade pickles, homemade ketchup, crusty rolls and really good cheese.

Or I might just eat them out of the jar with a fork. Either way…

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.  ~Confucius

Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough.  ~Author Unknown

After spending an inordinate amount of time messing about with recipes for lemon curd, I was really surprised to find, on a bag of Meyer lemons, the most uncomplicated recipe ever. Instead of putting a time limit on stirring the juice and sugar and eggs into silky smoothness, there was just the simple instruction to stir the mixture over boiling water “until it thickens to the consistency of pudding”.

That one word, “pudding”, transformed the whole process of making lemon curd into something easy and intuitive. Who knew?

The tart was the final course of a meal prepared for my aunt and uncle, during which I told them about my impending cross country move.

After spending an inordinate amount of time messing about with jobs I just can’t seem to get into, I’m packing everything up and moving to the West Coast. I’m going to try pursuing some passions and working to support those passions and see if I can’t light that proverbial double boiler under my uninspired arse and get those creative juices bubbling. I’m scared, I’m nervous, and I’ll miss my family and friends, but I’m also excited and ready to get going on a simpler, (and I’m sure) more productive life.

So there it is. Post #100. Exciting things happen in the (almost) spring, don’t they?
